Press Brake/Shearer Operator (2ND SHIFT)

The Press Brake/Shearer Operator sets up and operates the press brake to perform a variety of complex forming and bending operations on sheet stock. Calculates layout from profile dimensions to accurately size material required. Sets up and operates power shear to cut metal or plastic objects such as plates, sheets, slabs billets or bars to specified dimensions and angle.


- Ensures that all guards and safety devices are installed and operating properly. Performs required equipment safety inspections. Reports any discrepancies to Production Supervisor and shuts the equipment down if necessary.
- Installs the correct forming dies for the press brake operation involved to produce the shapes specified in work sheet and/or indicated by drawings.
- Sets dies and stop gauges and adjust ram stroke for varying thickness of material.
- Calculates layout from profile dimensions to accurately size material required.
- Follows instructions as to the sequence of forming operations or when not specified, plans the sequence of bending operations best suited for the size and shape of the trim required to fill work order.
- Instructs helper on how to position and hold stock in the dies.
- Checks dimension of shapes after bending, compares with drawings and specifications, and makes necessary equipment adjustments.
- Determines job requirements from job order including dimensions and quantity of sheared pieces.
- Determines most economical method of shearing material. Sets back gauge for accurate parallel shearing and front gauge for variety of required angle cutting.
- Pulls prescribed material from racks. Lays out shearing to obtain most economic use of material, saving unused material for future use. Returns unused material to proper storage area.
- Performs on-going quality control of own work by inspecting work for size, quantity, and color. Checks dimensions of sheared pieces against specifications. Uses measuring instruments such as rulers, scales and protractor.
- Replaces dull shearing blade with sharp one as needed.
- Assures quality of work through accuracy, neatness, paying attention to details, thorough understanding of information, with minimal amount of rework. Conveys personal commitment to quality by demonstrating good quality behavior. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve quality of material or process.
- Maintains work area, equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly fashion, returning unused materials or equipment to proper storage place.
- Reports any problems or difficulties to Production Supervisor.
- Ensure that hazardous material and waste handling is conducted within the guidelines of the training provided.
- Ensures conformance to all aspects of the ISO 14001 standard and Construction Specialties’ Environmental Management System (EMS), including its environmental policy while performing job functions that may have a significant impact on the environment.


- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Able to continuously lift 25lbs and sometimes lift 100lbs
- Sets-up, adjusts, and operators Brake Press to perform a wide variety of operations on a diversified line of work.
- Ability to operate a punch press, drill press, belt sander, impact gun, nail gun and radial arm saw.
- Ability to read shop orders.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
- Basic Computer knowledge - BPCS a plus.
- Mechanical Trade school, 2-3 years working in the construction field, any maintenance type jobs held, preferred.
- Able/willing to work end Shift (2:30pm - 11:00pm) and some overtime when needed.
